Destiny for Children Association Sibu (DfC) is a Non-Profit Organisation and a Non-Government Organisation, registered with the Registry of Societies since 2013 (PPM-010-13-29102013).
DfC was set up with the purpose of helping the social needs in our society. DfC’s focus is on :
Stateless Children
These children cannot enroll in national schools due to the absence of personal identification documents. In addition, many do not have birth certificates because their parents’ marriages were not officially registered.
Non-Malaysian Children
Many are children of migrant workers in sectors such as construction and informal work, and some are unable to enrol in national and private schools due to documentation requirements and financial challenges.
School Dropouts
These children often drop out from National Schools because their family upbringing and home conditions do not play an encouraging or supportive role in their education; they are unable to cope with the social interactions in the school; or are unable to follow the academic expectation of their year group.
Street Children
These children never had a chance to go to school due to their family’s extreme financial situation. Their parents often perceive that having their children to help them earn moneyis more important than giving them education. They would ask their children to go to work at an early age, to go begging on the streets, or scavenge at rubbish dumping sites for recyclable items tobe sold.
DfC’s purpose is threefold
01
To function as a learning centre to give hope for these children so they have a chance at a better future.
02
To provide a caring environment where the children can develop.
03
To help the children develop a positive perspective of their life and to strengthen their self-worth and value as a person.
DfC’s main activity involves a teaching program that has been tailored to meet the learning abilities and skills of the children studying at DfC. Teachers at DfC assess the children’s capacity of understanding and create an academic syllabus to help them learn. Presently, there are 147 students studying at DfC, with children ranging between the ages of 7-16 years old.
The children are taught Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin, Mathematics, Science, Computer Skills, Moral Education, Physical Exercise & Sports, with classes running from Monday to Friday. Upon completion of their studies at DfC, they receive a Certificate of Attendance to affirm that they have studied at DfC.
DfC was relocated to No. 9, 1st-3rd FL Lorong Chew Siik Hiong 5, Sibu in August 2024 to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment for the students and teachers. There are currently 11 staff : 9 teachers, a principal and an administrator.
DfC receives contribution from some parents who can afford to give RM25.00 as school fees. However, we still rely greatly on the contributions and donations from our local community to continue to support the education and day-to-day running of the organization.
